Stay Pretty Pals

It can sometimes be hard to keep up with all the different teen girl fashions, as they seem to be ever-changing. Teenagers’ style is often dictated by the group they hang out with, or the music they listen to, rather than the latest trends. It’s a good idea for a teen girl to discover what fashion suits her, and what she is comfortable wearing, and to stick with that look.

  1. Boho

    • The boho, or bohemian, fashion is simple, casual and stylish. Made popular by teen celebrities, such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, this trend combines several elements to give you a laid-back hippie look. The main elements include a floaty prairie skirt, cut-off tights, cowboy boots and big sunglasses. A strappy vest or a feminine blouse works well on top. Big bead necklaces and lots of bangles are the right accessories for this look.

    Preppy

    • Preppy fashion is a smart and grown-up look for a teen girl. Wearing a v-neck sweater or polo shirt is indicative of the preppy trend, teamed with khaki shorts or skirt, knee-high socks, a blazer and tennis shoes or other flats. To make the look a bit edgier, try adding items of plaid, nautical stripes, suspenders or bold colored socks or tights. You could also try wearing high-heels as part of a new take on this fashion.

    Grunge

    • The grunge look started in the late 1980s and was popularized in the early 1990s by the band Nirvana. However, it is still popular for teens today. Grunge is almost anti-fashion, intended to look effortless, as though you’re not trying. To get the grunge look, wear ripped up jeans with sneakers. You should wear plain cotton t-shirts, or band t-shirts, and flannel or plaid shirts over the top. Alternatively, you could try a floral print baby doll dress with work boots.

    Emo

    • Emo is a relatively recent teen girl fashion. The emo trend requires you to wear mostly black, but with accents of bright colors, such as neon pink or green. Emo girls normally wear black skinny jeans and a studded belt. Shirts are often brightly colored or black with a bright logo. In emo fashion, you can’t go wrong with shirts or accessories, such as hair clips, that feature Japanese cartoon characters, especially Hello Kitty.

10 easy cleaning tips for lazy girls

It’s not that you’re lazy; in fact you are incredibly busy now the sun has come out! Rushing from tanning sessions to bikini-buying afternoons and long BBQs; there simply isn’t time to keep the house clean. But housework-challenged ladies, fear not, because here are10 of the best tips, products and shortcuts to clean your house this summer with minimum effort… Phew!

1. Go Minimalist
Dump that junk! Simply develop a love for minimalist interiors; because the less dust-attracting objects in your home, the easier it is to keep clean. On a small level this means chucking your clutter by only keeping things in your house that have a function. On a larger level it can mean replacing dusty carpets for hard floors such as wood flooring, tiles or even concrete. Either way, creating a minimalist interior will set you up for a life of minimal cleaning!

2. Evriholder Microfiber Slipper Genie
These frankly genius slippers have chenille microfiber soles that gently dust and polish your, wood flooring, tiles or linoleum while you walk around the house going about your normal business. They come in all sizes, so for best results get a pair for each person living in your house or even give them to visiting guests. Job done!

3. Steam Clean Your Microwave
Here’s a nifty little tip to avoid scrubbing caked on food from the inside of your microwave and which you can do while you’re cooking. Bring a bowl of water to the boil in your microwave (if you can, stick a slice of lemon in) and stop it heating the minute the water is boiling, but leave the door shut. Leave it steaming for about 10 minutes and everything should just wipe off easily with a damp cloth or paper towels. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.

4. iRobot Vacuum
This nifty bit of kit means you never have to pick up a vacuum again! The iRobot Roomba is a vacuum cleaning robot that navigates its way around your rooms, switches effortlessly from carpets to hard floors and even returns to its self-charging station. Not cheap, but very effective.

5. Build It Into Your Workout
Ok, so by now you’ve realised there is a minimum amount of cleaning you will have to do, no matter how many gadgets you buy or pots you soak. But by turning your cleaning sessions into a work-out, you can kill two birds with one stone and save precious time for tanning. Plus, you’ll look great in those summer bikinis. Cleaning burns around 100 calories per half hour and you can even wear wrist and ankle weights to tone your muscles at the same time. Simply blast out your favourite girly music and get going! (Or try this Ultimate Cleaning Songs playlist by 1926 Wood Flooring)

6. Toilet Lime-Scale Remover
If you’re not doing this already you’re missing a trick! When cleaning your toilet, don’t waste time scrubbing the inside to get rid of limescale build-up, use a limescale remover. You can buy these from all supermarkets and just squirt them up and around the inside rim, leave overnight and voila! The limescale will just wipe off clean with your toilet brush, leaving a shiny, clean bowl. Yes, just like that.

7. Dyson Hand Held Vacuum Cleaner
Dust-buster and crumb-muncher supreme, the Dyson handheld vacuum cleaner means you can dartle around the house sucking up dirt and crumbs where needed. Ideal for quick pick-ups and spot cleaning, it’s battery-powered and comes with a battery charger too. Without a lead or bag, this handheld vacuum cleaner is a no fuss bit of cleaning kit you can use for hard to reach places such as the stairs or car as well. Nifty.

8. Soak Your Pots
Ladies, don’t attempt to scrub dry pots clean of food, you are wasting your time! Stick them all in a sink full of hot, soapy water and leave them while you watch the Hollyoaks Omnibus. When you come back, they will wipe clean super-easy, no scrubbing needed.

9. Swiffer Sweeper
Great for wood, tiles or vinyl, the Swiffer Sweeper means you never have to get out a vacuum, mop or broom for your hard floors again! Use a dry sweeping cloth to remove dust and hair and then repeat the process with a wet cloth to dissolve dirt and grime better than a mop would. Bish, bash, bosh.

10. And if you really can’t face any of the above?
Get a cleaner!

 Put Shimmer Under Your Eyes

Like Miranda Kerr

Shimmer on your upper lids is a no-brainer, but how about on your lower lids? Miranda Kerr went for it here and it’s just so lovely…

0803-miranda-kerr-eye-makeup-shimmer-botttom-lid_bd.jpg
0803-miranda-kerr-shimmer-lower-lids-close_bd.jpg
She’s got a ring of shimmery champagne eyeshadow all around her eyes, which makes them twinkle even more than usual. Oh, and there’s a matte pink above it on top to keep things warm and inviting, but that’s not really what I want to focus on. I want to talk shimmer. We tend to use a light handle with anything that sparkles for fear that it’ll get into tacky territory. But with a shade this soft, you really can’t go wrong. The lesson: A ring of shimmer can be lovely and ladylike if it go with a subtle color.

Would you wear this eye makeup look?

5 Fun Quick Easy Hairstyles in Under 1 minute. Perfect Any Time or School

Beauty. Brains. Breeding. Bucks. Billboards. The 5 Bs sum up the new generation of media-savvy, super creative, multi-hyphenated trendsetters who dominate not just print and web, but are taking over TV screens and the slew of billboards scattered all over the metro. Whether they’re playing DJ at a local hotspot, acting in an indie art film, or jetting off to an exotic European town for a just-for-fun photo shoot, It Girls possess a brand of je ne sais quoi that propel them to capture everyone’s attention.

BFFs Liz Uy, Isabelle Daza, Anne Curtis, Solenn Heusaff and Georgina Wilson in a Jing Monis Salon billboard.

High profile party girls and society scions like YStyle editor Celine Lopez and real estate heiress Divine Lee headlined the scene in previous years, gracing fashion shows, magazine covers, and lifestyle pages; also acting as muses to up and coming photographers and fashion designers. These days, new generation It Girls have evolved into women with names that resound in both sosyal and showbiz circles, women who are self-aware enough to turn themselves into actual “brands,” and who know how to tease their audience, leaving everyone wanting more, more, and more.

10.  Laureen Uy

Not even out of college yet, Laureen Uy has taken a liking to fashion early on, following the footsteps of equally fashion-forward siblings Liz Uy and Vince Uy (Preview magazine’s creative director). This University of Asia and the Pacific co-ed has built up her impressive portfolio by styling for several fashion rags, and eventually putting up her own online store, Stylebreak, which now has a beautifully designed showroom in Eastwood City. How this web-savvy fashion fiend divides her time between school, styling gigs, and keeping her fashion blog Break My Style consistently updated is a wonder—but it’s probably her multi-tasking skills and talent for putting together experimental and eclectic looks that has gotten her so far in fashion, in such a short span of time. Her style outlook is a breath of fresh air, and her passion for what she does can only promise even better things to come from this talented twenty-something.

9.  Isabelle Daza

Although it’s virtually impossible to mention Isabelle Daza without mentioning her iconic mom (1969 Miss Universe Gloria Diaz) and her equally stunning cousin (Georgina Wilson), she has certainly broken out of that mold and proven her worth as one of today’s most well-known It Girls. With billboards for clothing brand Human launching her into the public eye, this DLSU early childhood education grad is known in fashion for her too-cool-to-care style that perfectly encapsulates her love for rock festival Coachella and her free-spirited sports-loving lifestyle (she plays football, basketball, and tennis). Though spotted in the hottest clubs in the sexiest threads with fellow party-going It Girls, Isabelle is also often seen in comfy kicks, messy ponytails, and a clean, fresh face—something that adds to her gorgeous girl-next-door allure.

8.  Sarah Gaugler

Famously unconventional and absolutely talented, Sarah Gaugler rocks the fashion scene with her hardcore style that garnered her a huge Globe Tattoo endorsement (check out her billboards for both Globe and Silverworks—you won’t miss them). Sarah stays creative by exposing herself to the arts in pretty much all aspects. Aside from playing up her rock chic style, she’s also lead vocalist of Turbo Goth, a model, and an illustrator and designer who graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. Sarah fuels her passion for ink and illustration by running her own tattoo service—with so many people looking up to Sarah, there’s no doubt that people are lined up to have themselves inked by this uber-talented It Girl.

7.  Tricia Gosingtian

Japan-obsessed Tricia Gosingtian dabbled in fashion by getting occasional modeling gigs, and mostly by snapping shots of her friends from school. In 2007, she began shooting for a teen magazine and has since skyrocketed to fame, even putting together a “dark fairytale” themed editorial for Preview’s 150th issue. Aside from Tricia’s burgeoning career in photography, the Ateneo graduate is also known around the world for being one of Lookbook.nu’s top 10 fashion inspirations, a top blogger on Tumblr, and a “style icon” on Chictopia. Endorsements follow Tricia wherever she goes—most recently, she has become an official brand ambassador for Forever21, and has worked with Bayo and Heima as well. Her biggest success, however, was being picked as one of Tumblr’s chosen 24 bloggers (and the only one from Asia) sent to cover New York Fashion Week.

6. Saab Magalona

Part of the famous Magalona brood with late dad Francis, mom Pia, and siblings Maxene, and Elmo, Saab has a lot to live up to. Luckily, performing as a host, singer, actress, and model comes naturally to this young artist. A frequent blogger (www.isabellamagalona.com) and Twitter fiend, Saab goes from writing about her TV projects, posts artfully shot photos of her and her friends, writes about her family, and in between, shows her readers her quirky, kooky view of the world that endears her to pretty much everyone—showbiz fans, fashionable girls looking for an accessible icon to model, and fun, creative hipsters from the indie persuasion.

5.  Anne Curtis

When Anne Curtis made her debut as a princess in Magic Kingdom, no one knew that the 12-year old would become one of Philippine show business biggest stars. Host, VJ, actress, model, and one of the metro’s biggest endorsers to date, Anne is queen of the billboards battle, reigning over other It Girls and actresses with ads for SMDC, Bench, L’Oreal, Belo, Folded & Hung, Freeway, and a host of other brands. Always dolled up, ready to party, and eager to mix high-low fashion, this charmer reels in the guys with her winning smile, easygoing attitude, and star quality.

4.  Alodia Gosiengfiao

Just utter the word “Cosplay” and practically everyone will mention Alodia Gosiengfiao’s name. An icon in the anime-loving, Japanese-obsessed subculture of cosplayers that are taking over Manila’s otakus, she rose to fame in 2003, when she won the C3 convention as Gun Magge Rikku of FFX-2. A mainstay in competitions here and abroad, Alodia’s flair for recreating out-of-this-world costumes and mimicking characters to a tee has earned her a place as one of FHM Philippines’ 100 Sexiest Women in the World. Cosplayers have much to look forward to as Alodia slowly enters the mainstream—she now hosts comedy show Laugh Out Loud with Luis Manzano.

3.  Liz Uy

Former behind-the-scenes style savant Liz Uy spent years dressing up the models and actresses that grace Preview’s fashion pages. Her relationship with heartthrob John Lloyd Cruz, however, propelled her to instant stardom, making her the subject of many Sunday talk shows, gossip rags, and web forums. Though she’s no longer with JLC, her fandom continues to grow—her followers have become increasingly interested in her every move. Rumored to have dated P-Noy, she was touted by Chuvaness.com as a potential candidate for one of the world’s chic-est first ladies. Liz’s appeal has garnered her a cover for Preview magazine’s January-February 2011 issue, bringing the girl behind the cameras right up to the frontlines. Gossip and fan-following aside, what keeps Liz on top is her unparalleled eye for fashion and a knack for being en pointe in all things style.

2.  Georgina Wilson

This self-proclaimed “ex-chubby” girl has blossomed into one of the most beloved media darlings of the fashion world, with the occasional crossover to showbiz via that huge Bench billboard with Willy Revillame, an ex-boyfriend in GMA-7 star Richard Gutierrez, a cameo in Christian Bautista’s music video for the aptly titled remake of “Beautiful Girl,” and a stint as a judge on noontime show, Showtime. This accounting and economics graduate from the University of Sydney dominates fashion magazine covers, catwalks, as well as the party circuit—making the rounds with equally gorgeous beau, Borgy Manotoc. Always in a masterful mix of high and low fashion (she has a penchant for melding designer bags and Louboutins with Bangkok buys and American Apparel threads), Georgina gets her gorgeous genes from a family of famous beauties, including 1969 Miss Universe, Gloria Diaz.

1.  Solenn Heussaff

You don’t get any more Euro than French-Filipina multi-hyphenate, Solenn Heussaff. Recently launched into showbiz fame by (almost) winning GMA 7’s Survivor Philippines. A former Candy magazine cover girl, this stunning model keeps herself busy booking jobs as a VJ, host, and actress (paired off with Richard Gutierrez in the recent February offering, My Valentine Girls). Typically showbiz? Sure. But Solenn’s allure comes from her seemingly infinite well of talent that goes beyond good looks and acting chops. Looking for substance? This artiste has studied fashion design in Paris, earned enough training in makeup, body painting and prosthetics to call herself a professional make-up artist, is a painter set to hold her first exhibit this year, and has recently signed a recording deal that promises to showcase her high brow, jazzy, soulful crooning. In the meantime, fans fascinated by this siren can catch her on Party Pilipinas, Captain Barbell and Fashbook.

Here at CF, we talk a lot about the latest… everything. From clothing trends to hot hairstyles to popular nail polish colors, we always keep our collective finger on the fashion pulse. But while it’s fun to keep up with all things new and fresh, fashion isn’t about blindly following trends – it’s about expressing yourself with your clothing. At the end of the day, a strong sense of personal style is the foundation of every standout look.

In order to really delve in and have fun with fashion, you need to first understand your own sense of style.Once you know what’s “you” and what’s not, you can begin to cultivate a collection of pieces that flatter you, express your personality, and that you’ll love for years to come. That’s what true style is about.

To help you on the way, I’ve utilized the CF archives to compile five useful tips to help you develop your personal style. I hope you guys find them inspiring!

1. Determine Your Colors

I know this tip may remind you of women in the ’70s asking each other, “I’m an autumn, what are you?”, but I’ve noticed that having a personal color scheme is a hallmark of all truly stylish women.

To determine your colors, you need to assess your hair, skin and eye color as well as what colors you feel you look the best in. Determining your “season” can introduce you to a whole new palette of colors! The point of doing this is to use these colors as a guide while shopping so that you can select the pieces that will look best on you. I’m a summer, what are you?

Colorful crayons

2. Choose a Style Trademark

style trademark is something that you either wear every day (like Blair Waldorf‘s “B” necklace) or simply an aesthetic that you are known for. It’s that piece that your friend texts you about and says, “I was wearing _____ today and I felt just like you!”

Usually, a signature item or style chooses you, because it’s just something that you love so much you have to wear it all the time. But it helps to think about what you value, what you find aesthetically pleasing, and what you love to wear most. Personally, my signatures are bold nautical stripes and Sperry Topsiders. What’s your signature?

3. Embrace Your Shape

Although we’re big proponents of wearing what you want regardless of your body shape, learning to dress for your body type can be a good jumping off point when developing your style. Knowing how to highlight your best features can save you time and take your look from average to amazing.

The most important thing you can do when studying your shape is to stay positive. Dressing well is all about having an underlying layer of confidence, and if you are overly critical of your body, you undermine that. Don’t tell yourself that you have a pudgy stomach – instead, remind yourself that you have a tiny waist, or beautiful legs, or a shapely chest, or amazing arms – you get the idea. Highlight your assets and embrace your body as it is!

For more on this subject, one of the best style books I’ve read on dressing your shape is “The Science of Sexy” by Bradley Bayou. I’ve checked this book out multiple times from my local library and I love it so much that I finally bought my own copy!

4. Create a Personal “Look Book” or Inspiration Folder

A great aid for honing in your style, and also a really fun project, is creating a personal look book of your favorite past outfits. By documenting your style on a daily basis, whether by starting a style blog or just saving photos on your computer, you start to get a sense for which outfits you like best, and which pieces look best on you. It’s a fantastic way to document your look as it evolves.

Another idea is to start an inspiration folder or inspiration binder to keep track of your fashion inspiration. I created my own book by grabbing a sturdy notebook and collaging photos that I like. I’d cut pictures from magazines, print from Pinterest, or even steal photos from my well-dressed friends on Facebook! Before I go shopping, I take review my book to remind myself what I like, what I’m looking for, and how I want to dress. Sometimes I’ll even take it shopping with me!

5. Mix it Up: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed

Dressing like a mannequin from Abercrombie & Fitch is so high school! To personalize your wardrobe and move away from cookie-cutter clothing, try mixing up your wardrobe with vintage items or pieces that have been passed down from your mom or grandma (something old), add in some well thought-out designer pieces and trends (something new), and finish with thrifted pieces or even borrow from your friend’s wardrobe (something borrowed). Finding a balance between these three things can make your look uniquely yours!

MANILA, Philippines – Bagong taon, bagong buhay — or new year, new life, as most Filipinos say as they welcome another year.

Fashion is no different. Time to ditch the skinny jeans, raid your mom’s closet, and do some shopping, as well-known designer Rajo Laurel and Preview magazine fashion editor Daryl Chang list the “in” cuts, colors and designs for 2011.

“Hide, keep and store your skinny jeans. Wide-leg pants are going to be the key shape for trousers for 2011,” Laurel said in an interview on ANC’s Headstart.

The color of the year is honeysuckle, a shade between peach and lavender, Laurel said, citing international fashion forecasts.

He notes that this may be a good year for Filipinos as the vibrant color suits our skin tone.

Other must-have shades this year include clover (deep green), amaranth (reddish-rose), amber (orange-yellow), pumpkin (a color that resembles the gourd-like squash), aqua (halfway between green and blue), iceberg (a pale tint of blue) and jade green (same color as the gemstone).

Neutrals — such as black, white, ecru and navy — meanwhile, are here to stay.

“The trend always begins with the fabric, which serves as our (designers’) canvas. People who produce fabrics internationally dictate the colors,” Laurel said.

Designs, cuts

The bigger the print, the better, as these will be the in thing this year, according to Laurel. Think fruity, floral and space prints matched with flats and platforms.

Other top fashion trends for 2011, as mentioned by Chang, include:

Vintage boudoir. High-waist bottoms, covered-all-over body suits — pin-up style.

Skate skirt. Pleated skirts and flared hip dresses that smack of figure skater inclinations.

Ladylike blouse. Think silks and sheers. Top off a skirt or a pair of trousers with this for instant polish.

Paper cut fringing. Paper shredder leather creates a swingy yet boldly structured version of the omnipresent boho trim.

Pattern splice. Clash print against print by mixing textiles of different design families and contrasting, equally bold color stories.

Aerographic prints. African-inspired prints get a modern spin with digitized versions and print-on-print patchwork.

Dyed fabrics. Tie-dyes grow up with a fiery texture unlike the circular-patterned rainbow splashes of yore.

Refurbished jumpsuits. Patchwork, sleeve cutouts and jewel necklines breathe new life into the Bohemian wardrobe staple.

Thigh splits. Show off the newest erogenous zones with an up-to-there slit that will have you doing high kicks on the style radar.

Best hair tricks ever
Here’s how to fix your toughest hair problems.
By Robin Immerman
1. REPAIR DAMAGE
First thing first: Get a trim to remove your dead and split ends. Then to avoid getting them in the future, shampoo less often (every other day, max)—overwashing sucks out your hair’s natural oils, causing strands too look dull and to break. And also swap the conditioner that you use in the shower for a leave-in type, which penetrates deep into your hair shaft to strengthen your strands so they’re less likely to snap
TRY: Infusium 23 Leave-In Treatment
$6, drugstores
2. HIDE BANGS
Clip them back or blend them into the rest of your hair. Here’s how: place a flat brush on top of your bangs, and brush them from left to right, then right to left as you blast them from above with a blow-dryer (on a low-heat setting) for about one minute. This will make them lie flat and mix naturally with the rest of your hair.
TRY: Goody Salon Styler Natural Boar Brush
$6, drugstores
3. ADD VOLUME
Try this styling strategy: First make sure your gel, mousse, pomade, or hairspray has an alcohol base—it will hold your style longer. (Oil-based products weigh down your hair and can make it look greasy.) Second, when you style your hair in the morning, add more body (make it bigger) than you actually want—some of that volume will fall in about 20 minutes, leaving you with a style that looks great. If you need to redo your style later in the day, use a refreshing spray—it products you originally used, so you can restyle and add more lift to your roots.
TRY: Clairol Herbal Essences Style Refreshing Mist,
$3, drugstores
4. ZAP COLOR
You can—just try this recipe: in Plastic cup or bowl, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a large dollop of your usual shampoo. Stir together well.
